Turn Your Experiences Into a Clear, Personal, and Memorable Application
Writing strong college essays is not about finding one “perfect” topic or trying to guess what an admissions officer wants to hear.
It is about discovering the experiences, qualities, and goals that make you different and learning how to communicate them through specific stories, thoughtful reflection, and a voice that genuinely sounds like you.
Through one-on-one coaching, students receive personalized guidance through every stage of the writing process, from the first brainstorming session to the final proofread of the entire application.
You will not be handed a generic formula or have someone else write your essays for you.
Instead, you will learn how to develop your own ideas, strengthen your writing, and submit an application that represents who you are and where you hope to go.
Get Support With the Parts of the Essay Process That Matter Most
Discovering Your Strongest Essay Direction
You do not need a dramatic, life-changing story to write a compelling essay.
Together, we will explore your activities, interests, meaningful relationships, challenges, accomplishments, academic goals, and memorable experiences to identify stories that reveal something important about you.
Turning General Ideas Into Specific Stories
Many early drafts stay too broad:
-
“Volunteering taught me compassion.”
-
“Sports taught me perseverance.”
-
“I have always wanted to help people.”
We will move beyond these general statements and develop the specific moments, conversations, decisions, and emotional experiences that make the essay personal and believable.
Finding a Structure That Fits Your Story
Not every student should use the same essay structure.
Depending on your material, your essay might focus on:
-
One central experience
-
Several connected memories
-
A problem-and-solution structure
-
A personal transformation
-
A recurring image or metaphor
-
A past-to-present-to-future narrative
Your structure will be developed around your ideas rather than forcing your story into a prewritten template.
Developing Reflection and Personal Insight
A college essay should do more than describe what happened.
It should help the reader understand how you think, what you value, how you have changed, and what your experiences mean to you now.
Through targeted questions and revision exercises, we will add the introspection and personal insight that give your essay depth.
Staying Organized and Ahead of Deadlines
The application process becomes much more stressful when every essay is left until the final weeks.
We will break the work into manageable steps, establish priorities, and create a realistic writing schedule based on your application deadlines.
Personalized Guidance for Your Entire Application Writing Portfolio
Coaching can include support with:
-
The Common App personal statement
-
The Common App activities list
-
The Common App Additional Information writing sections
-
Supplemental Essays
-
Scholarship Essays
-
University of California Personal Insight Questions
-
BS/MD and other combined-degree applications (the "Why Medicine?" essay)
-
“Why This Major?” essays
-
“Why This College?” essays
-
Community and identity essays
-
Leadership essays
-
Challenge and personal-growth essays
-
Honors college applications
-
Essay planning across the entire application
The goal is not simply to produce several individually strong essays.
We will also examine how the essays work together so that each piece adds something new to the application rather than repeating the same activities, qualities, or stories.
A Structured Process Without a One-Size-Fits-All Formula
College Essay Process
Strong essays are rarely written in one sitting. They are developed through repeated drafting, focused feedback, and increasingly detailed revision.
My process breaks that work into clear stages so students always understand what they are working on and why.
1. Brainstorming and Journaling
We begin by generating material.
Students explore their interests, goals, activities, relationships, challenges, accomplishments, and emotionally meaningful memories without worrying about producing a polished essay immediately.
2. Choosing a Direction
We review the brainstorming and identify the ideas with the most potential for storytelling, reflection, and connection to the student’s broader application.
3. Outlining and First Drafting
Students organize their strongest material and produce a complete initial draft.
At this stage, the goal is not perfection. The goal is to create something substantial enough to evaluate and improve.
4. Strengthening the Core Narrative
We examine the essay’s central message, organization, examples, and overall direction.
We identify what should be expanded, removed, reorganized, or replaced.
5. Connecting Past, Present, and Future
Where appropriate, students connect meaningful past experiences to their current interests, intended major, college goals, or future career direction.
This gives the application a clearer sense of purpose without turning the essay into a résumé.
6. Adding Sensory Detail
Students learn how to recreate important moments through carefully selected sights, sounds, physical sensations, dialogue, and environmental details.
The goal is not description for its own sake. Each detail should contribute to the emotion and meaning of the scene.
7. Developing Introspection
We add the student’s thoughts, emotional reactions, uncertainty, realizations, and present-day reflection.
This is often where a basic story begins to become a truly personal essay.
8. Strengthening Voice and Figurative Language
When appropriate, students experiment with metaphor, imagery, humor, repetition, and other storytelling techniques that make the writing more distinctive and cohesive.
9. Sentence-Level Revision
Once the content and structure are working, we improve clarity, pacing, transitions, word choice, concision, and sentence variety.
10. Final Review and Submission Preparation
The final stage includes proofreading, checking word limits, reviewing the essay within the context of the full application, and making sure the writing is polished without losing the student’s natural voice.
What Is Included in One-on-One Coaching?
Individual Zoom Video Sessions
Students meet directly with Spencer for personalized conversations about their ideas, drafts, revision priorities, and application goals.
Sessions are collaborative and focused on the student’s current stage of the process.
Detailed Draft Feedback
Students receive specific feedback on what is working, what remains unclear, and what should change in the next draft.
Rather than simply correcting sentences, feedback focuses on helping students understand how to make stronger writing decisions themselves.
Brainstorming and Guided Questioning
When students feel stuck, we use targeted questions to uncover more specific memories, emotions, examples, and connections.
The goal is to find material that belongs uniquely to that student.
Support Between Sessions
Students may submit revised drafts and communicate about questions or next steps between scheduled meetings.
A Clear Revision Plan
Each session ends with specific priorities so the student knows exactly what to work on next.
Students should not leave with vague instructions such as “make it more interesting” or “add more detail.”
They should understand which section to revise, what kind of material to add, and what the next draft is intended to accomplish.
More Than Essay Editing - Long-Term Benefits
The purpose of coaching is not only to improve one application essay.
Students also develop skills that can help them throughout college and beyond:
-
Brainstorming before drafting
-
Organizing complex ideas
-
Writing with specificity
-
Receiving and applying feedback
-
Reflecting on personal experiences
-
Revising through multiple drafts
-
Communicating in an authentic voice
-
Managing long-term writing projects
The strongest outcome is not an essay that merely sounds polished.
It is a student who becomes more confident, independent, and intentional as a writer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the student need to have a draft?
No. Students can begin with a completed draft, several possible topics, an outline, an activities list, or no writing at all.
Do you write or rewrite essays for students?
No. The purpose of the process is to help students communicate their own experiences in their own voice.
I provide questions, strategies, feedback, examples, and revision guidance, but the student remains the author.
Can parents attend the strategy call?
Yes. Students and parents are both welcome to participate, especially when discussing timelines, goals, and coaching options.
Do you only work on the Common App essay?
No. Coaching can also include supplemental essays, honors college applications, scholarship essays, combined-degree applications, UC PIQs, activities descriptions, Additional Information sections - any written component of the application.
Can you help a student who is not a strong writer?
Yes. Students do not need to begin as advanced writers. The process is broken into manageable stages, and the level of structure is adjusted to the individual student.
How many sessions will a student need?
That depends on the number of essays, the student’s current progress, application deadlines, and how much support the student needs.
Available options can be discussed during the free strategy call.
Is this full college admissions counseling?
The primary focus is application writing and the strategy surrounding the written portions of the application.
I can help students research colleges for school-specific essays and consider how their writing supports their broader application, but this is not a comprehensive admissions service covering every aspect of college selection, financial aid, testing, and application management.
Can you guarantee admission to a particular college?
No ethical coach can guarantee an admissions result.
The goal is to help students submit the strongest, clearest, and most authentic application writing they are capable of producing.
Your Story Is Already There

You need to look more closely at the experiences you have already had, understand what they reveal about you, and learn how to communicate them with clarity and purpose.
With a structured process, thoughtful feedback, and consistent revision, the college essay becomes much more manageable.
