Fulbrighter Podcast
Recently, I had the opportunity to be featured on the Fulbrighter Podcast alongside staff from the Institute of International Education and other Fulbright alumni to discuss the application process for the Fulbright Program—an international education exchange program that has produced all kinds of successful alumni including Nobel laureates and even heads of state.
As a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Kazakhstan from 2023–2024, I shared advice for future applicants based on my own experience navigating the highly competitive application process.
One of the biggest lessons emphasized was the importance of talking to previous Fulbright recipients. Alumni can offer invaluable insight into specific countries, cultural expectations, and application strategy. In my own case, speaking with former grantees helped me refine my essays and avoid country-specific mistakes I never would have anticipated on my own.
I also encouraged students not to be discouraged if they feel uncertain about applying or even if they are rejected the first time. The process itself can be transformative. Preparing my Fulbright application helped me develop confidence in my own story, clarify my goals, and ultimately become a stronger writer and communicator.
That same philosophy now shapes my work through Prestige Writing Consulting. Whether I’m helping students develop college essays, scholarship applications, or personal statements, my focus is always the same: helping people articulate who they are in a way that feels authentic, thoughtful, and compelling.
If you are considering applying for Fulbright, graduate school, scholarships, or competitive academic programs, I recommend listening to the episode. It offers practical advice directly from Fulbright administrators, reviewers, and alumni about what makes an application stand out.
And if you’re working on applications of your own, feel free to reach out by email: spencer.harrison@prestigewritingconsulting.com . I’d be happy to help.
